SFC (Ret) Richard H. Newton Jr.
Sergeant First Class (SFC) Newton is a graduate of Governors State University, University Park, Illinois, where he earned a Bachelor's in Arts Degree. He has completed the Advance Non Commission Officer and Basic Non Commission Academy, a required course for Non-Commissioned Officer's. His other principal military education courses include 62B Heavy Equipment Mechanic, and 15E Pershing Missile Chief, 75B Personnel Administration Specialist, and 75Z Personnel Administration Supervisor.
SFC (Ret) Newton began his military career as a private. He graduated from the Heavy Equipment Engineer course at Ft. Leonard Wood, MO. And completed his first four years at Ft Knox, KY 1978-1982. SFC Newton reenlisted for Pershing Missiles and worked as a missile chief for seven years until the INF Treaty was signed between the United States and Russia, from 1982-1989. During this time, he also completing an overseas tour in Stuttgart, Germany (1983-1985) and then again in Frankfort, Germany from (1987-1990). The INF treaty was a treaty designed to destroy all medium and long range missiles. In November 1990- April 1991, he deployed to Desert Shield-Desert Storm with the First Cav. Division, from Ft, Hood, TX. SFC (RET) Newton was then reclassified to a (75B) Personnel Sergeant working as the Personnel Supervisor at Fort Hood, TX. 1-41Inf. Battalion from 1990-1997. Moving to the next assignment overseas Germany serving as the Brigade Personnel Sergeant, servicing over 3000 soldiers with families from 1997-1999. His last active duty assignment was working as Personnel Supervisor for Training Command at Fort Sill, OK. From 1999-2001. He retired after completing over 23 years of active duty service. SFC (Ret) Newton began his teaching career as an Army Instructor at Morgan Park H.S. from 2001- 2003. Moved to Administration Sergeant in the Director of Army Instruction office (DAI) from 2003-2005, where he started the Middle School Cadet Corp program in Chicago. He was the Army Instructor and Senior Army Instructor for 2 years at Bowen High School 2005-2014. His last assignment was as the Army Instructor at Schurz High School from 2014-2017.
SFC (Ret) Newton's military awards and decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal (1st Award), Army Commendation Medal (3rd Award), Army Achievement Medal (3rd Award), Good Conduct Medal (7th Award), Kuwait Liberation Medal, National Defense Service Medal, NCO Professional Development Ribbon (Numeral 3), Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon (4th Award).
