The United States Army sponsors the Junior ROTC Cadet Leadership Camp for selected cadets for all CPS schools which sponsor a JROTC program. JCLC is conducted at the St. John’s Northwestern Military Academy, located in Delafield, WI, approximately 2 hours from Chicago, at the end of the school year.
The diverse curriculum for JCLC camp consists of physical fitness training, leadership reaction course, rappelling off a 50 foot tower, construction of a one rope bridge, archery, water survival, obstacle confidence course, land navigation, rafting, water survival training, intramural athletics, and a graduation ceremony. Cadets start their day at 5:50 AM with a flag raising ceremony, conduct physical fitness training, attend round robin classes, and then compete in two intramural sports per day, after dinner, against other JCLC companies. Cadets usually end their day around 10:00 PM, after they prepare foe the following day’s training. Although all of the previously mentioned training events are challenging and fun, the most dynamic educational experience each student will benefit from are the leadership opportunities offered during this encampment.
Cadets from the Wells Raiders Battalion will have an opportunity to train with and lead cadets from the other Chicago JROTC programs, as well as other cities and states. The primary goal is to develop and teach leadership skills in our cadets, so they can utilize those skills to further enhance the leadership and discipline in the Raiders Battalion.
By now I am sure you are asking yourself what is the cost and what process is used to select cadets to attend this world class educational adventure. First, we provide virtually everything that is required to this encampment (transportation, housing, meals, uniforms, etc.) for free. Second, there are a small number of items each cadet must provide such as underwear, toiletries, towels, swimming suit, etc. (parents will receive a detailed list). Cadets are selected for JCLC who are actively involved in our Junior ROTC program, are in good academic standing, have good attendance records, exhibit good behavior in and outside of the classroom and have displayed promising leadership potential for the following school year. Lastly, it is absolutely mandatory that every cadet who attends the JCLC have medical and dental insurance.
The Raiders Battalion receives six to eight JCLC slots (half girls/ half boys). There are two cycles and each cycle is five days long. Cadets are dropped off at a central CPS location by their parent(s) or legal guardian(s) at 7:00 AM on the first day of camp, and picked up at approximately 3:00 PM (same location) by their parent(s)/guardian(s). However, families are highly encouraged to attend the graduation ceremony. Cadets are then allowed to depart JCLC with their family.
