Computer Science Academy Chair
Ms. Daniels has been living and teaching in Chicago for more than 19 years. Her teaching experience includes work in public and private, adolescent and adult face-to-face and virtual learning environments, and she has also played the roles of Technology Program Manager, Technology Specialist, and Network Administrator.
Ms. Daniels leads the Game Programming Academy at Wells, and she also develops and delivers Computer Science (CS) curriculum for Northwestern University’s Gifted Learning program. She has received several accolades in the two years that her program has been at Wells. She designed the Recognizing Educators Advancing Chicago Students (REACH) Web Development Performance Task. The assessment is used across the Chicago Public Schools district as a component of educator performance evaluation, and to measure student academic growth. Her CS program was featured in the Chicago Tribune. She was one of 40 people selected nationally (and internationally) to attend a CS conference in Silicon Valley. Ms. Daniels was nominated (by her students) and selected as Teacher of the Month (May 2016) for the city of Chicago. She was featured in a promotional CS video for a national Computer Science organization. A film crew from California flew to Chicago to film her and her students for a Computer Science documentary. She was featured in a promotional video supporting public education, and the CS curriculum that she develops and delivers to students in Northwestern University’s Gifted Learning Program was featured in a National Gifted Student Conference in Florida.
Ms. Daniels consistently seeks out new learning opportunities, in efforts to advance her own learning and keep her students abreast of current and emerging technologies. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Miami University of Ohio, a Technology Master’s degree from National-Louis University, and a Master of Arts in Literacy Education degree from Northeastern Illinois University. She is currently pursuing a third Master’s degree in Computer Science. Ms. Daniels has earned the following Illinois teaching credentials: Computer Applications, Computer Installation and Repair Technology, Computer Operations and Programming, English Teacher, Reading Specialist, Reading Teacher, Systems Networking and Telecommunications, Technology Specialist, and Web Page Development and Design. She is currently completing the requirements for endorsements in Anthropology, Psychology, and Sociology.
Her favorite things to do when she’s not teaching and working with technology are photography and travel. She enjoys photographing flowers the most, and has often interrupted her day to photograph a beautiful flower. In addition to visiting every US state, she would love to visit every continent, and hopes to visit Antarctica within the next year. Ms. Daniels has become somewhat of an adventurer in the past five years, as she has zip lined over rainforests and parasailed over the Pacific. She is still working up the nerve to jump from a plane, but she has completed an indoor skydiving session. Aside from her personal adventures, she sees every group of students that she works with as a new technical adventure – an opportunity to both teach and learn.
